I recently submitted the the interim report for the British Academy. I think it is good to tabulate what we’ve done in the first year.
The plan of action mentions the following:
The following things have been done:
- We organised a project meeting in Nagano, Japan
- We did several presentations from project members on the different country contexts (England, Hong Kong, Japan) with regard to the geometry education.
- We studied various textbook materials from the different countries and decided what focus out digital maths books would have.
- We looked at different software programs and resources as to decide what platform we might use for the digital maths books. In particular we looked at the ‘in house’ software that Shinshu University had for geometry proofs, as this software would be converted to tablet ready versions (in English).
After this
- The software was converted and re-programmed for tablets. The system used to deliver the digital books was translated to Japanese and Chinese.
- First draft versions of the digital books are in preparation (September, first version, ready for our next meeting Hong Kong)
- Several blogs were written (note: recently there has been a technical issue with some of them)
- Some publications are in preparation.
In the second year we will:
- Have one project meeting in Hong Kong;
- Will finalise first versions of two digital books on geometry;
- Will finalise new (HTML5 proof) content on geometry proofs;
- Will finalise Chinese and Japanese translations of the user interface for the digital books;
- Will extend the content on the website;
- Will have a project meeting in England, where we visit several schools;
- Will ‘test drive’ the first versions of the digital books in some schools;
- Will author draft versions of promised publication(s);
Then in the third year we will extend the trialling of the digital maths books through Lesson Study and a quasi-experiment.
